Our team served as the prime firm to design improvements at the interchange of CTRMA’s 290 Toll and TxDOT’s SH 130 in east Austin that includes three new flyovers or direct connectors linking the two toll facilities. The project addresses congestion resulting from rapid growth and development along the two heavily traveled corridors. In addition to providing direct access between 290 Toll and SH 130, the project design also included frontage road and ramp improvements to both 290 Toll and SH 130 and a southbound SH 130 collector-distributor at Parmer Lane.

To capitalize on favorable funding, the project was developed with an expedited design schedule. Our team updated and revised the original geometric design prepared in both the SH 130 and the 290 Toll schematics in order to provide a stand-alone PS&E construction project that meets the current needs of the region and also facilitates the planned ultimate configurations for both tollways. The specific needs to accommodate the future ramp and frontage road configurations of the ultimate SH 130 facility further complicated the design effort. Optimization of the 290E/SH 130 geometric design resulted in a five-level interchange with over 10,000 LF of bridge structure, including a CapMetro Railroad Overpass, and 66,000 SF of retaining wall.
