Bridge & Special Structures
CP&Y’s Bridge and Special Structures Group is recognized throughout the state for staff expertise and quality in the bridge/structural design and PS&E preparation for TxDOT, tollway authorities, city and county clients. Projects have included new bridges, culverts, bridge replacements, widenings, rehabilitation projects, and interchanges utilizing prestressed concrete, reinforced concrete, post-tensioned concrete and structural steel components.

Fort Bend Westpark Tollway
CP&Y performed the PS&E preparation for the 2,786’ long Direct Connector S-E as part of the Westpark Tollway/SH 99 Interchange for the Fort Bend County Toll Road Authority. CP&Y developed the conceptual design and layout of the 21-span direct connector and completed the detailed design for all of the bridge elements. Structural elements include prestressed concrete I-beam spans, continuous steel plate girder units, and reinforced concrete single column, multi-column, and straddle bents on drilled shaft footings.
US90A/SH 6 Project
CP&Y completed the PS&E for this 2.5 mile project which included the intersection of US90A and SH 6 in Sugar Land in Fort Bend County. As part of this project, CP&Y developed and designed the US90A/UPRR Overpass, two fly-over ramps, and University Boulevard Overpass utilizing TxDOT’s prestressed concrete U54 beam as well as a three-phase bridge replacement of the existing bridge at Ditch “H”. CP&Y also completed designs for special overhead sign supports and included the use of rammed aggregrate piers to improve soil strength under the MSE retaining walls.

FM 967 at Onion Creek
CP&Y completed the PS&E for the layout and detailed design of this five-span phased bridge replacement of the existing structure over Onion Creek in Hays County. The bridge project involved the design of prestressed concrete I-beams and reinforced concrete abutments and bents on drilled shaft foundations. CP&Y evaluated scour to complete the foundation design, and utilized TxDOT’s C411 rail to provide a more aesthetic appearance in conjunction with the scenic Onion Creek in this area.

Rufe Snow Underpass
CP&Y completed the PS&E for the two-span, 190’ wide two-phase bridge replacement of the existing structure over IH 820 in Fort Worth. CP&Y designed the replacement structure to accommodate the future widening for IH 820 from four to ten lanes. The project included the complex design of continuous steel plate girders, diaphragms and connections, and concrete bridge deck to accommodate turnaround lanes with 39- and 49-foot radii at the slab edges coupled with a shallow superstructure depth to meet minimum vertical clearance over IH 820.

SH 45/IH 35 Interchange
CP&Y completed the PS&E for a continuous steel plate girder unit and supporting single column bents for a portion of the Connector N-W on this interchange in Austin. The design effort included the analysis of curvature effects on the steel unit as well as p-delta analysis for the column design.
