
SH 199 Reconstruction
This $56 million project completes the 3-mile section of SH 199 between Western Center Boulevard and Nine Mile Bridge Road, adding six freeway lanes (three in each direction), ramps, and three bridges at Western Center Boulevard, Hanger Cut-Off and Nine Mile Bridge Road. This project is part of the $1.3 billion effort, initiated by Texas Governor Greg Abbott and the Texas Legislature, to improve mobility.
Our team provided construction engineering and inspection. Work included full main lane reconstruction, the addition of six main lane bridges, mass concrete placement, deep multi-box culvert placement, utilization of OSHA 1926 subpart P for trench safety, utility relocation including Level A SUE, utility engineering under contract, CPM analysis and comment, MSE Walls, soil nail walls, drill shaft walls, traffic control placement with ADT’s over 100k vehicles per day (vpd), lime treatment, cement treatment CRCP placement, and the utilization of frontage roads to carry traffic while main lanes were constructed.
The pedestrian/safety railing installed is new and innovative. Our in-house survey group used LiDAR to work on-site to construct the retaining walls and safety railing. This sped up the process and allowed the project to progress ahead of schedule. TxDOT is implementing this process and type of safety railing into future mobility projects.
One of the challenges of the project was maintaining safety for two children’s daycare facilities located along the frontage roads which saw an increase of traffic from 10k vpd to 100k vpd during construction. Addressing this safety challenge was critical to the success of the project and our top priority.
